The Blue Bird Wrasse (Gomphosus caeruleus), often called the Blue-Green Bird Wrasse or Indian Ocean Bird Wrasse, is a striking marine fish famous for its elongated, beak-like snout. Native to the Indian Ocean and Red Sea, this highly active, semi-aggressive predator requires massive aquariums, tight-fitting lids to prevent jumping, and a diet of meaty foods.
Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: Sexually dimorphic. Adult males boast a brilliant dark blue to blue-green body, with light blue edges on their pectoral fins and lime-green dorsal/anal fins. Females are typically bluish with a white chest and yellow tail.
  • Size: Can reach up to 12 inches (30 cm) in length.
  • Temperament: Highly active, constant day-swimmers that will aggressively hunt for food. They can sometimes become bullies to smaller, more docile fish.
Aquarium Requirements
  • Tank Size: 100 gallons or larger to provide adequate swimming space.
  • Reef Compatibility: Considered not reef-safe. While they won't harm corals directly, their fast-paced swimming can knock over unglued corals, and they will consume small invertebrates, ornamental shrimps, and crabs.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 72°F to 78°F (22°C - 25.5°C)
    • Salinity: 1.020 to 1.025
    • pH: 8.1 to 8.4
  • Diet: Strictly carnivorous. Their specialized snout is built for plucking worms, brittle stars, and small crustaceans from deep within rocks and sand. They should be fed vitamin-enriched mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other chopped meaty foods.
