A pistol shrimp (also known as a snapping shrimp) is a small crustacean famous for its massive, disproportionate claw. By snapping this claw shut at extreme speeds, the shrimp shoots a high-pressure jet of water that generates a "bubble bullet" used to stun prey and defend its territory.
The Science of the "Gun"
The shrimp's primary weapon is not the claw itself, but the acoustic and thermal blast generated by the rapid closure:
  • Bubble Bullets (Cavitation): The claw shuts so fast (up to 100 km/h) that it tears through the water, leaving a vacuum in its wake. This creates a vapor-filled bubble. 
  • Extreme Heat: When the surrounding high-pressure water collapses that bubble, it produces a brief, highly localized temperature spike reaching over 4000° C.
  • Loud Snap: The implosion generates a snapping sound that can reach 218 decibels, making the pistol shrimp one of the loudest animals in the ocean.
The "Shrimp & Goby" Friendship
Pistol shrimp are famously known for their symbiotic relationship with goby fish. Because the shrimp are nearly blind, they rely on the goby fish to act as a lookout. In exchange, the shrimp digs and maintains a shared burrow where both creatures can hide from predators.
