The Salifert Mg (Magnesium) Profi-Test is a water test kit designed to measure the magnesium (Mg) concentration in marine and reef aquarium water. Magnesium is an essential element that helps maintain the balance between calcium and alkalinity, making it crucial for coral growth and overall reef stability.
Description
The Salifert Magnesium Profi-Test allows aquarists to accurately determine magnesium levels in saltwater aquariums using a titration method with liquid reagents and a color-change indicator. The test provides reliable readings and measures magnesium concentrations with approximately 30 mg/L resolution.
Magnesium occurs naturally in seawater at concentrations of about 1350–1500 mg/L and is an essential component of chlorophyll, making it important for photosynthesis in marine plants and algae.
It also helps stabilize calcium and alkalinity levels by slowing the formation of calcium carbonate, which allows important trace elements to remain available in the aquarium water.
If magnesium levels drop too low, maintaining proper calcium and alkalinity becomes difficult, which can negatively affect coral and calcareous algae growth.
Key Features
-
Measures magnesium concentration (Mg) in marine aquarium water
-
Resolution: about 30 mg/L (ppm) increments
-
Clear color change endpoint for easy result determination
-
Not affected by calcium or strontium interference within normal reef ranges
-
Suitable for marine aquariums only
-
Provides approximately 50 tests per kit
Importance in Reef Aquariums
Magnesium is gradually depleted through algae growth and coral calcification, as well as through the use of supplements such as kalkwasser. Regular testing helps ensure magnesium remains within the proper range to maintain a stable reef environment.
